Michael Manley was Prime Minister of Jamaica from 1972-1980. During this time he led the People's National Party (PNP) in enacting many social reforms including free education, land reform, and minimum wage. He won the United Nations Gold Medal for his activities against apartheid in South Africa and for Namibian independence. As a leading member of Socialist International, he is a prominent spokesman for the path of nonalignment for Third World Nations. He is currently the leader of the opposition PNP in Jamaica and is the author of the book Up the Down Escalator: Toward a New international Economic Order.
