Iwona Tyszkiewicz joined the Polish Solidarity movement in 1980 and went underground after marital law was imposed. In 1982 she was convicted of "working for the destruction of the state" for distributing newspapers and was sentenced to 3 years in prison. Freed after a general amnesty and a year of forced labor, she helped organize miners' strikes. She now produces television program working through an independent trade union.
