Gretchen M. Bataille is Senior Vice President for Programs and Services at the American Council on Education in Washington, DC. She recently finished a one-year term as interim vice president for academic affairs at the Fashion Institute of New York-SUNY, after serving for four years as president of the University of North Texas. She previously served as the chief academic officer of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina system. Bataille is a recognized scholar of Native American literature and has focused on issues of diversity, civil rights and ethnic studies. Part of the Women's Leadership Series.
Gretchen Bataille's additional administrative positions have included provost and academic vice president at Washington State University, provost of the College of Letters and Science at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and associate dean for academic personnel at Arizona State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and chairman of the university's Department of English. She earned her doctorate in English at Drake University, and her Master of Arts in English and Bachelor of Science in English and French at California Polytechnic State University. She was previously on the Iowa State English faculty.
