Author of Continuity and Change in Latin America. After completing his MA and PhD in history at the University of California at Berkeley, McAlister began his teaching career at the University of Florida. In addition to teaching Latin American history, Professor McAlister served in a variety of administrative positions at the University of Florida, including Head of the Department of History and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies. For over a decade the questions of the role of the military in Latin American politics has been one of his major research interests. The results of this research are in published works.
