Of Uruguayan birth and education, Emir Rodriguez Monegal is one of the foremost literary critics of the contemporary Latin American novel and an internationally known scholar. Currently associate chairman of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale University, Professor Monegalhas taught at the Instituto de Profesores in Montevideo, Uruguay, and held visiting professorships of Latin American literature at El Colegio de Mexico and Harvard University.
