General Westmoreland served in both World War II and Korea prior to his appointment as commander of US Military Forces in Vietnam and Southeast Asia in 1964. A four-star general, his military career ended in 1972 following a four-year tour as Army Chief of Staff. His book, A Soldier Reports, recalls forty years of service and focuses on his experiences in Vietnam.
