Born in Younkers, New York, Kouwenhoven received his bachelors from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He later received his MA and PhD from Columbia University. Kouwenhoven has served as a member of the Bennington College Literary Faculty and as assistant editor to Harper's Magazine.
