Luis Gilberto Murillo is the youngest Colombian to win a gubernatorial election. He organized his winning campaign around the environment and issues related to the ancestral lands of the Afro-Colombian and indigenous populations of Colombia. His advocacy for his people led to his kidnapping, repeated death threats and eventual exile to the U.S. He is opposed to U.S. military aid to his country.
