Gretchen Birkle is the Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor., and has recently taken the lead on issues related to human rights violations in Darfur, Sudan. She was previously deputy director for the Eurasia division of the International Republican Institute, managing the organization's activities in nine countries of the former Soviet Union, and also served on the staff of Senator Arlen Specter. Gretchen graduated from Pennsylvania State University in political science and has a Master's Degree in International Relations with a specialization in Soviet Studies from The Johns Hopkins University Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.
