Free food, music, drama, soap box debates and exhibits mark this annual event. Dione Somerville, ISU Dean of Students, will introduce the event, and Barbara Mack, associate professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, will kick off the soapbox debates. Part of the First Amendment Day Celebration.


[b]Feast on the First Amendment Schedule[/b] 11:00 – Lunch service begins 11:10-11:20 – Dione Somerville, Iowa State’s Dean of Students, opens with commentary about the importance of the five freedoms enshrined in the First Amendment. 11:20-11:45 – ISU Professor Ben Percy and creative writing students from the English Department read their compositions. Students are: Marissa Landrigan, Jimmy O'Brien, Liz Clift and Scott Rickets. 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. – Soapbox debates. Moderated by Barbara Mack, Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication associate professor. 12:45 p.m.-1:10 – “Tinker, the Rock Opera,” by Davenport Central High School journalism students. Written by Sam Hayes. 1:10-1:15 – Presentation of First Amendment Day 2009 Essay Contest winners 1:15-2:00 – Hootenanny. Protest music through the decades. Moderator is Dylan Boyle, news reporter for Iowa State Daily.
