Currently a professor of Political Science at City University of New York, Dr. Piven has studied and written about the politics of social welfare, the structure of government, and the theories of political movements. She has co-authored several books, including Regulating the Poor: The Functions of Public Welfare, The Politics of Turmoil, and The New Class War: Reagan's Attack on the Welfare State and Its Consequences.
