Mary Frances Berry has served on the US Commission on Civil Rights since 1980 and is the Geraldine R. Segal professor of American Social Thought at the University of Pennsylvania. her books include Black Resistance/White Law: A History of constitutional Racism in America and Why the ERA Failed: Politics, Women's Rights and the Amending Process of the Constitution. She was chancellor at the University of Colorado, provost at the University of maryland and professor of history and law at Howard University.
