Steven VanRoekel recently stepped down as the USAID chief innovation officer, where he was responsible for advising the agency on using technology and data in its response to the ebola epidemic. Previously, he served as Chief Information Officer of the United States. VanRoekel is a graduate of Iowa State, with a degree in management of information systems. Prior to his position in the White House he led digital communications programs at USAID and was managing director of the Federal Communications Commission, FCC, where he oversaw all operational, technical, financial, and human resource aspects of the agency. He worked at Microsoft Corporation from 1994 to 2009, including as a senior director in the Windows Server and Tools Division. World Affairs Series: Redefining Global Security
