Carl Djerassi, best known as the "father of the birth control pill," is a professor of chemistry at Stanford. In addition to his ground-breaking work on the first steroid to be used effectively for birth control, he also developed antihistamines, was the first to synthesize cortizone, and founded one of the first environmentally aware pesticide companies. He has published over 1,200 articles and seven books in his areas of research. He won the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, the National Medal of Science, the Priestly Medal, and the National Medal of Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Part of the World Affairs Series.
