SUMMARY:Ancient Greeks and Romans and the American Founding
DESCRIPTION:Part of the America250 lecture series.\n\nAs they argued and fo
 ught for their independence\, the members of America's founding generation
  turned frequently to their Greek and Roman predecessors for inspiration a
 nd guidance. In the years following\, as the newborn American republic cha
 rted its course into the future\, Greece and Rome remained two of the most
  important guide stars for the American political experiment. This lecture
  will explore the place of Greek and Roman history\, literature\, and poli
 tical thought in the culture of Eighteenth Century America\, the influence
  of the Greek and Roman Classics on figures like Adams\, Hamilton\, Jeffer
 son\, and Madison\, and the parts of the American constitutional system--e
 specially freedom of speech and separation of powers--shaped by Greek and 
 Roman ideas. It will also examine how we as citizens can\, like the founde
 rs\, effectively use the past as we make decisions for the nation's future
 .\n\nDr. Alexander Hall is an Associate Teaching Professor of Classical St
 udies and Latin at Iowa State University. He holds a PhD in Classics from 
 the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, with a research focus on early Gre
 ek literature. His courses explore ancient mythology\, epic heroes\, class
 ical drama\, and religion\, offering students hands-on experiences like re
 enacting rituals and interpreting omens. He also teaches introductory Lati
 n\, helping students build a foundation in Romance languages and deepen th
 eir understanding of English grammar.\n\nThis lecture recording can be fou
