Thomas J. Givnish conducts research on plant ecology, evolutionary biology, and biogeography, with a focus on plant adaptations for energy capture and reproduction, adaptive radiation, speciation, historical biogeography, and drivers of species distributions and plant species diversity. He and his students have conducted phylogenomic and ecological studies on many groups, including bromeliads, orchids, lilies, and monocots as a whole; Eucalyptus; and the Wisconsin flora. Givnish received his PhD in biology at Princeton in 1976. He is the Henry Allan Gleason Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Fellow of AAAS, a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Botanical Society of America.
