Every four years, Americans head to the polls thinking they’re voting directly for the President, but there’s a big, 230-year-old obstacle standing between your ballot and the person you pick for the White House. It’s called the Electoral College, and according to Mr. Beat, it’s easily one of the most misunderstood, controversial, and uniquely 'American' features of our democracy. Originally designed as a compromise by the Founding Fathers to balance the power between big and small states, it has since sparked a never-ending debate about whether or not it’s a vital safeguard for our republic or an outdated relic that silences the will of the people.
