Karl Gschneidner is the Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State and Senior Metallurgist with the Ames Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy. Gschneidner's primary research interests include the physical metallurgy of rare-earth metals and alloys, theory of alloy phase formation, magnetic refrigeration, and passive and active magnetic regenerator materials. He has published more than 400 journal articles, 136 book chapters, and written or edited 43 books. Gschneidner was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2007 and is the 2008 recipient of the Acta Materialia Gold Medal, considered the top international award in materials science. He received his Ph.D. from Iowa State and worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory before returning to Iowa State to join the faculty. Sigma Xi Lecture.
