 Claude Steele is the Lucie Stern Professor in the Social Sci
 ences at Stanford University\, where he has been on the facu
 lty since 1991. He is a professor of social psychology and d
 irector of Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behav
 ioral Sciences. Steele's research interests focus on how gro
 up stereotypes\, such as racial or gender stereotypes\, can 
 influence academic performance. He is the coauthor with Ther
 esa Perry and Asa G. Hilliard III of Young\, Gifted\, and Bl
 ack: Promoting High Achievement among African-American Stude
 nts and a participant in the PBS Frontline series Secrets of
  the SAT. Steele was elected to the National Academy of Scie
 nces in spring 2003. He has been awarded honorary doctorates
  from the University of Michigan\, University of Chicago\, Y
 ale University\, and Princeton University. A social hour wil
 l precede the lecture at 7:00 in the South Ballroom and a re

 ety for Personality and Social Psychology\, president of the
  Western Psychological Association\, and was a member of the
  Board of Directors of the American Psychological Society. S
 teele is a recipient of numerous awards\, among which are th
 e Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize\, the Distinguis
 hed Scientific Career Awards from both the American Psycholo
 gical Association and American Psychological Society.  He is
  a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and t
